We will focus on relationship and community building, to connect with others and make new friends as we begin this new school year. We will participate in community service projects throughout the year, determined by the students. This club is student-led, so you decide what we focus on. All are welcome!

GSA

GSA is a group of kids that are bound by inclusivity at their core. The Gender-Sexuality Alliance is for members who identify as anything under the queer umbrella (LGBTQAI+), trans students, and any allies that want to come show support and to widen their community of friends. We frequently have staff who come to show support for ALL our Pumas. Our club facilitates activities that build friendships and a positive community. Some meetings we may play games, make art together, or just enjoy one another in conversation. Our QSA club sponsor does not teach any content, just promotes inclusivity at Preston Middle School.

MathCounts

MATHCOUNTS enrichment, coaching & competition promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state & territory. For more than 30 years, MATHCOUNTS has been one of the most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors & students. MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school competitive mathematics program that promotes math through a series of fun and engaging contests. The program is geared towards students who love math, problem solving and pattern recognition.  We learn ways to figure out tricks to solve math problems in unique and quick ways.  The after-school program meets weekly to practice. Top students have the opportunity to represent Preston at a district, regional, and state level (and possibly even at the national level!).  The competition is a bit like a spelling bee, but with math! Most aspects of the competition have a time component...who can get the correct answer first or who can answer the most correct answers in the time allotted. Subject matter includes algebra, geometry, combinatorics, counting, and number theory.

Outing Club

The outing club is an opportunity for students to get outside with other students and staff. The goal is to host one outing club event per month (Exception: December). The dates and times vary each month, students will need to listen to morning announcements for information about upcoming events. Permission slips will be located in counseling office or in Mr. Williams classroom. Students are encouraged to drop in on any event that sounds interesting, no experience is necessary.
